Common sense is sense that is common to everyone.

To the person just stumbling on these pages - some of these writings are the result of my letting off steam after a somewhat confrontational point in my career. I am now much calmer, and less apt to write here. However, I continue to address issues, expressed in an AAMI journal article and concurrent committee work. From time to time, I will report on that work here.

Common sense is just that: a sensibility that is commonly held. No one person can claim it for their own, no one can control it, or, hopefully, make it disappear. Common sense is what everyone makes through their own internal thought process and through experience. Having said that, I really don't know what common sense is--it keeps changing, and/or I keep discovering it "for the first time." So for myself, gaining common sense is a process of discovery, a process of learning, and forgetting, and learning all over again.

When I began work in this field, I was probably more certain of my opinions than I am now, yet less able to articulate them. It has taken me 23 years to formulate, and reformulate the opinions and ideas I have, and as I have seen these radically change over time, I now reasonably expect them to continue to change. The results of reviewing my ideas over time will surly be that I become less certain of what I have to say, as I become more able to articulate and express them. At some point perhaps, I will brilliantly state that I am certain of almost nothing.

Commonsensedirections is non-commercial, and will remain that way.

The motivation for this site comes from the frustrations, battles, and real satisfaction obtained from working in this field.
